Tropic Weekender: Our guide to the best events and things to do in Cairns

There's plenty of exciting things to do across the region this week. Music fans can catch Michael Franti & Spearhead's, head inland for Music at the Mount, or stay local and go to Boatfest, while art lovers can check out the Yellow exhibition at Crate59 or the Over Thinkers Anonymous - Philosophy Discussion Night at The Secret Jungle.

There are also cultural events such as the Songkran Festival celebrating Thai New Year, and Celtic Illusion's new production, as well as free lectures by the Cairns Historical Society. Wednesday 12 April

Michael Franti & Spearhead are performing their high-energy live show at The Tanks. Franti has been a favourite of Australian audiences for thirty years, first appearing at Bluesfest in 2002 and continues to be known for his inspiring music and commitment to wellness and optimism.

Thursday 13 April

Miss Lady Saint Diva is back in Cairns with a night of Drag Bingo at Dunwoody's that you don't want to miss! Get ready to sing and dance along as she takes over Cairns, along with special guest Brisbane Icon Miss Synthetique.

Michael Franti continues his stay in Cairns with a wellness experience like no other, Yoga Jam at Munro Martin Parklands. The event features high-vibe yoga classes hosted by iconic yoga studios and teachers, accompanied by Michael Franti's upbeat acoustics to get participants dancing, flowing and leave their hearts full of joy. BYO yoga mat.

Friday 14 April

Make pour decisions as Guyala returns with their Wine and Cheese Night. Enjoy a selection of gourmet cheeses and a variety of thoughtfully selected wines, including a glass of prosecco on arrival. Bookings are essential as there is limited capacity, so grab your tickets stat.

Crate59 is opening a new exhibition Yellow. The evening will feature the latest artworks, a bar, and music, all with a yellow theme. Those who wear yellow  on the night also get free entry.

Screen Queensland and Screenworks is hosting Make It In FNQ: From Concept to Greenlight, an event covering project development and funding opportunities in the screen industry. The event is aimed at helping Queensland creatives pursue funding opportunities and understand project development. Although there are no tickets remaining, you can join the waitlist.

The Secret Jungle is hosting Over Thinkers Anonymous - Philosophy Discussion Night. The event is an open group discussion centered around a specific topic related to philosophy and is hosted by Brenton Clutterbuck, also known as Cluttered Butts, who is a resident over thinker. All are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion.

Saturday 15 April

The Songkran Festival is a celebration to mark the start of the Buddhist New Year and is one of the biggest events in Thailand. This year celebrations return to the Esplanade with performances, delicious food, and an opportunity to get amongst some cultural practices such as splashing water to wish others well, and traditional dancing. Set up a spot on the lawn, make a family day of it, and celebrate Thai New Year.

The Panda Room presents Boatfest, brings you Byron Bay vibes up to the north featuring Joker Pokers, Ju Ju Moon, The Brazilians, Transparent Komeleon, and Heffa Lump. This is a byo event with Big Trev's souvlaki on site.

Black Sun / Blood Moon is a fantastical story about finding your voice and saving the world, brought to the stage by writer and director Chris Bendall. The play follows two intertwining stories - one magical and the other all too real - inspired by the Fridays for Future student-led protests of 2019. The play features stunning video and projection and amazing life-size puppetry by Erth Visual and Physical.

Head west to Walkamin for Music at the Mount with Peter Kinch and Kaweyova. Brought to you by Mount Uncle Distillery, there'll be food truck favourites Duck & Felicias on site, as well as transfer buses from Atherton and Mareeba so you can let loose.

Gilligan's is enticing you to don more than usual for their Masquerade Ball, Masks and Mimosas. Dress to impress in your finest formal wear and enjoy a night of mimosa's, dj's and live music, a fashion show, and prizes. Plus, it's free entry all night long.

The Cairns Historical Society is hosting two free Local History Lectures; The First Motor Vehicles Over The Smithfield Range, presented by Dr. Peter Ryle, and Is Your Stem Too Long? Cyclone Myths and Misconceptions of North Queensland presented by Dr. Jon Knott. The lectures are followed by an afternoon tea on the veranda. The event is free and open to all, and is a great opportunity to learn more about the region.

Sunday 16 April

Celtic Illusion is back at CPAC with their new production, The Magic Returns. This unique show fuses Irish Dance, Magic, and Broadway-style choreography for a theatrical masterpiece featuring a cast of champion dancers and mesmerising illusions.

Reece Mastin is performing at Dunwoody's as part of his 10 year anniversary tour. With two platinum number one albums, three consecutive chart-topping singles, and a successful pop career, Reece has earned his place on the Australian rock circuit, with his distinctive voice and true-blue Aussie rock chops.

There's more Drag Bingo as Miss Lady Saint David heads north to the Palm Cove Tavern, joined again by Miss Synthetique. Between both shows, there's no excuse to not catch one.

Catch the latest indie films and documentaries from around the world with the End Credits Film Club. This week as part of their Unseen Cinema program is a screening of Belgian movie CLOSE; a heartwarming coming-of-age story of two best friends that won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes.
