Tropic Weekender: Our guide to the best events and things to do in Cairns

This weekend features a plethora of palatable pleasures. We are treated to performances by the likes of Lil Mase, Mat McHugh, Peking Duk, and many more local musos.

We have plenty of fabulous food waiting for you at Rocco, Wine Fiend, and of course the pinnacle of the weekend - Feast of the Senses. But wait, there's more! We've got comedy to consume, a circus to see, and we're pretty confident - a good time to be had.

Thursday 23 March

A big event in NQ, Feast of the Senses kicks off with a few warm up events before the big day on Sunday. Tonight we have Gone Troppo Trivia Night at the Innisfail RSL Club.

Talking Pictures is hosting a screening of Mad Max: Fury Road in the CPAC Studio Theatre, with a lively Q&A session to follow featuring host Fiona Sewell and award-winning Action Director, Stunt Coordinator, and Stunt Performer Lawrence Woodward. The event explores the history and power of the moving image, and is perfect for franchise fans and anyone interested in the art of filmmaking.

Peking Duk are back on tour, making a stop at non other than Gilligan's. Catch the beloved electronic music duo as they bring their energy and bangers to the Tropical North, and no doubt make a few people no-shows on Friday.

JCU is hosting a free JCU Alumni Cairns Networking Event for those eager to connect with fellow alumni and colleagues, learn about the latest news from JCU, and enjoy drinks and canapes at The Chambers.

Friday 24 March

The Court House gallery brings you Music in Session with another live music event, showcasing local talent and some of the best and most diverse out-of-town talent. This week we have Azizah Pertiwi, Adrian Thomas, and Klare Kuolga, kicking off from 5pm. This is a free, with drinks available for purchase on the night.

As part of Feast of the Senses, we have the Northern Food Trail Tour. The trail takes you north of Innisfail on to a range of local growers and producers including Pacific Coast Eco Bananas, Mungalli Creek Dairy, Shdaro Exotic Fruit Farm, and Madella Coffee. Unfortunately, this has proven a real treat and has sold out - meaning we can't wait till the Sunday!

Saturday 25 March

Cirque Mother Africa is celebrating 15 years fresh off a sold-out Broadway season. Returning to Aus with a brand new show, it features the best talent from nine African countries, including Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania. The musicians and artists will transport the audience to the breathtaking continent of Africa, providing 90 minutes of wonder, suspense, and joy.

There is an Open Day at The Spinal Life and Healthy Living Centre. Offering exercise programs and assistive tech for people with spinal cord damage, physical disabilities, MS, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, stroke, and other neurological conditions, this is a great opportunity for visitors see the facilities and learn more about their support services.

Lil Mase is back in Cairns to headline a live event at The Jack in 2023. He'll perform his latest and most popular tracks. The night will also feature special guest appearance by RnB sensation Bertie Anderson and local talents Z.D.C, Zander Digital, Hip-Hop Band Phat Love, and more to be announced. 

Guilt Free Comedy is back at Macalister's, this time with Chris Franklin and Evan Hocking. Chris Franklin is currently one of the top stand-up comedians in the country. Chris Franklin was once a sailor with the Royal Australian Army and is now a distinguished comedian with a distinctive brand of observational humour.

Join the Melanoma March, a 4km walk along the Esplanade to raise awareness and funds for melanoma research. The event is family-friendly and welcomes dogs on leads. The goal is to reach zero deaths from melanoma, which is currently the most common cancer affecting Australians aged 20-39.

Mat McHugh & The Beautiful Girls are embarking on their first tour in three years. The ‘Together At Last Tour’ marks the first time the work of both of McHugh’s groups will be combined on stage. The tour features a focus on the new songs he's been writing, which will be road-tested during the performances.

For the first time Caffiend is hosting it's own Wine Fiend experience. The evening features six specialty wines, each paired intentionally with canapé-style food. Guests will be welcomed with a negroni drink upon arrival, setting the tone for a fun night. Bookings are essential.

Husband and wife duo Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley have hit the road with their Country Music, You and Beer tour and a brand new show. They are performing all their new new songs and stories at BAR36.

In support of Earth Hour, Rocco is hosting Senses – Dining in the Dark. Set to be a unique dining experience that will take place sans illumination, providing guests with an opportunity to enhance their senses and enjoy a sustainable four-course set menu. The food served during the event is all set to be sustainable, and sourced from within a three-hour drive of Cairns.

It is Japan Day of Hope 2023, an event that aims to bring people together and spread a message of hope 12 years after the Fukushima disaster. On at Cairns Brass, the day features a variety of Japanese cultural performances, food, and activities. It's a great opportunity for people to learn about Japanese culture and to come together and support the message of hope.

Another weekend, another market, this time we have the Yungaburra Markets. With a diverse range of handmade arts and crafts, locally grown produce, food options, and live entertainment, it's a great way to experience the charm and creativity of the region.

Sunday 26 March

Feast of the Senses returns to Innisfail for it's 20th year as North Queensland's premier tropical food experience. The day includes a variety of food and wine stalls, cooking demos, live music, and other entertainment. You can sample an unimaginable range of tropical fruits, veges, meats, and seafood that our region sustains. The festival also showcases the diverse cultures of the region, with food and performances from the local Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Pacific Islander communities. This year is also the year of the glorious durian!

Chris Franklin just can't stay away and is back for more, but this time for Comedy Night at Dunwoody's. You may as well make a night of it with a dinner and show.

It's Sauced Up on Sunday at The Sauce, featuring the usual - craft beers, oysters, live music, and weekly seafood specials. This week we have local legend Troy "Saxman" Stevens, kicking it off from 3.30 pm.
