Hello Sailors! An impressive sight as HMAS Canberra steams into Cairns

About 1000 sailors and soldiers have steamed into Cairns aboard the Royal Australian Navy’s largest serving vessel, HMAS Canberra.

The ship has been in the region undertaking amphibious training exercises.

The arrival of the 230 metre-long vessel was only confirmed yesterday, after ports further south were unable to accommodate her.

The RAN flagship vessel will be berthed at Cairns Wharf until next Tuesday.

“She made quite a spectacular entry,” Ports North Chairman Russell Beer said.

“Not only is she a decent length but her height is very commanding.

“This is a real coup for the Port of Cairns.

“We have the flexibility and the capacity to welcome her on such short notice – not to mention having the beautiful natural surroundings and vibrant city which will prove perfect for crew and soldiers looking for some respite.”

The ship will take on one million litres of fuel during its stay as well as goods from local suppliers.
