Six scrumptious snippets for local foodie fanatics

Cairns’ already-fabulous foodie scene is going into overdrive this month, and TropicNow’s tastebuds are as tickled as can be.

From new seasonal menus to ludicrously cheap lunches (and all the belly-busting sweets and moreish margaritas in between), here are the top six epicurean events and gourmet goodies we’re excited about this June.

DOUGHNUT WORRY, BE HAPPY!

Calorie counters, look away now. Everyone else, dig out the elasticated trousers. You’ve stuffed yourself silly on their OTT burgers and cheesy chilli chips, and now Apex Milk Bar has added another decadent delicacy to their repertoire: Designer Doughnuts!

The Apex team will be slinging the city’s best gourmet, handmade doughnuts and cronuts every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at their hip Manunda hotspot. For hedonistic end-of-week eats, this treat can’t be beat!

WINTER WARMERS BY THE BEACH

Trinity Beach’s Martinelli Pizza Bar has long been the go-to place for made-from-scratch, Roman-style pizzas and tremendous toppings. And now, with the release of their walloping winter menu, there are even more funky flavours to choose from.

Warm up with a slice (or more) of Baa Baa Ganoush (lamb shoulder, sweet sour pumpkin, charred capsicum, babaganoush and saffron yoghurt), or try the revamped Smokey and the Brisket, guaranteed to get the heart racing with melaleuca-smoked brisket, homemade massaman curry, potato, mozzarella, Thai pickles, sesame and peanut. Pop in Wednesday to Sunday to find out more.

TWO-FOR-ONE TREATS IN PARADISE

Snuggle in with someone special at Paradise Palms over a two-for-one dinner every Wednesday and Thursday night in June.

The Kewarra Beach resort’s special ‘twofer’ menu for the month is packed with delectable dishes from around the globe, from Japanese katsu chicken and Thai reef and beef salad, to Moroccan lamb shanks and good old Aussie Black Angus rib steak with beer-battered fries.

These are crowd-drawing goodies, meaning bookings are essential. Nab yourself a table for two here: your loved one (and your wallet) will thank you for it!

$15 LUNCH AT MR SOY BOY? YES PLEASE!

Earlville’s Mr Soy Boy has been giving southside dining a great name since opening in 2015, thanks to chef/owner Ferdi Salvana’s dedication to using fresh, local ingredients and an eclectic Asian menu.

Haven’t had the pleasure yet? Now’s the time: Mr Soy Boy is dishing up divine $15 lunch specials every weekday between noon and 2pm.

The special menu changes weekly : get in from today to Friday for offerings including Lao-style pork larb (Mareeba ground pork mince blended with spicy Asian herbs, a tomato/cucumber salsa and steamed jasmine rice) and lightly-battered, line-caught local Spanish mackerel with a cabbage/bean shoot salad, toasted coconut and ginger/lime syrup.

LANEWAY LIBATIONS AT HARVEST

There’s no session like a Sunday session, a fact well-known to patrons of permanent pop-up Harvest Mexican on Mulgrave Road. But if you thought end-of-weekend chills at the laneway hangout couldn’t get any better, think again!

Already popular for its hip craft beer/wine/cocktail list and Tex Mex menu, Harvest Mexican is now offering rosé sangria, carafes of margaritas and their famous nachos every Sunday from 4pm. Okay, now it can’t get any better.

MEET EAT REPEAT 3

We don’t like to brag or anything, but TropicNow’s upcoming Meet Eat Repeat 3 is pretty much going to be the most incredible foodie event this town has ever seen.

We’ve recently released our food vendor line-up, and judging from reactions on social media, there’s a whole lot of pre-event salivating going on. And why not? We’ve got pop-up stalls from Noa, Ochre and Mr Soy Boy restaurants joining MER favourites including Apex Milk Bar, Mama Coco and Sipping Duck, sweet treats from Designer Donuts and Dutch Delights, wood-fired pizzas from Providore Amore, and so, so much more.

Be at the West Cairns Bowls club from 3pm on June 24, and follow the MER Facebook page for updates and details.
