HANDS OFF HERBIVOROUS FISH
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is asking anglers to avoid catching herbivorous fish to allow the reef to recover from back-to-back coral bleaching.
GBRMPA says that seaweed-grazing fish, including parrot fish, help control algal blooms at coral reefs. The organisation says algae has thrived in parts of the marine park where coral has died as a result of bleaching.
GBRMPA will consider officially protecting the fish as a “no-take” species, but hoped fishers would voluntarily stop catching them to give the reef “a helping hand”.
They’ve also asked fishers not to drop their anchors over the side on coral reefs.

INNOVATIVE HUB BRINGS THE DISADVANTAGED INTO THE DIGITAL AGE
Australia’s first innovation hub for minority groups has opened in Cairns, aiming at ensuring no one gets left behind in the digital age.
Digital Hive (DHIVE) was established by Aboriginal entrepreneurs Leigh Harris and Julie-Ann Lambourne.
DHIVE will support and develop founders, innovators and creators of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with a disability and other disadvantaged people.
The hub will be offering innovation workshops, start-up programs and mentoring for students and entrepreneurs living across TNQ. Follow DHIVE here.

SMALL BUSINESS? WIN BIG!
Small business owners have been given extra time to win big as part of this month’s Queensland Small Business Week.
The event’s Social Media Challenge asks small business owners to upload a short video about their unique or innovative business idea. The winner will score $10,000.
The theme for Queensland’s Small Business Week (May 15-20) is ‘Time to Thrive’. The week aims at inspiring small business ideas, and celebrates the sector’s $100 billion contribution to the state’s economy.

MASSIVE MARKET SPARKS FASHION FEVER
Get your shopping shoes on: Your Wardrobe Cairns is on tomorrow!
The annual event is one of the biggest days on the Cairns shopping calendar, with scores of stalls selling new, vintage and pre-loved clothes, shoes and accessories for adults and kids.
Your Wardrobe is a market with heart: gold coin entry donations will support Ruth’s Women’s Shelter, a Cairns not-for-profit organization that offers support and secure accommodation to women and children escaping family and domestic violence.
The cash-only event runs between 9am-1pm Saturday at Fred Moule Pavilion at the Cairns Showgrounds.

HEAT VS FURY MATCH SET TO BE A SCORCHER
Regional rivals Northern Fury and FNQ Heat will go head to head this Sunday in the Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary round six.
The match will be the fourth time the two teams have met this year.
The game promises to be a fierce one, with Heat looking to retain their winning streak, and the so-far winless Fury keen to step up from the bottom rung on the league ladder.
The match also marks the third time the tropical teams have met in Westfield FFA Cup Qualifying. In previous years, Heat has twice advanced to national round 23, while Fury have never reached the national stages.
The game kicks off at Barlow Park at 1.30pm Sunday.
