Tropic Weekender: Our curated guide to the best upcoming events around Cairns


Another long weekend ... don't mind if we do! 

Cairns will play host to some big names in live music this weekend, with Human Nature and Toni Childs in town, as well as plenty of local gigs.

This weekend's also your last chance to see the unmissable Archibald Prize in Cairns, which CAG has managed to wrangle an extra day of exhibition. 

It's looking mostly fine in Cairns, Port Douglas, Daintree, and in the Tablelands for all those wanting to head outdoors, while the Cassowary Coast is forecast to get a few heavy showers. 



Friday 30 April

Who’s up for a spot of bingo, with some beverages to boot? Stratford Deli is hosting Bogan Bingo tonight from 7pm, featuring a ‘fashion on the fields’ event and plenty of banter. 

Prada Clutch’s: All-drag revue is on tonight at CPAC, where the six-foot something songstress Prada Clutch and her 'girls' pay tribute to the history of Aussie drag – in concert. 8pm start.

Saturday 1 May

Gordonvale Market is on this morning in Norman Park, with plants, clothing and gifts galore ahead of Mother’s Day. 7am to midday. 

Makin’ Whoopee’s Makers Market is back at Crystalbrook’s Bailey, and this time it’s an all-day affair! From 9am to 3pm you’ll find stacks of stalls selling local handcrafts and arts, live entertainment, workshops, and food. 

Live at Machans Beach Hall is a collection of the region’s best artists, with music by Los Caracoles and Water Streets, Ritmos De Mi Tierra Dance Group, Hoolia Fujita art, and food by La Fonda Latina Kitchen. On from 6pm, tickets essential.

Join the legendary Toni Childs for a special two hour performance as she celebrates her 30 year anniversary of her critically acclaimed album Union. Tanks Art Centre, 3.30pm start.

Sunday 2 May

With a focus on sustainable local, quality handmade products, Palm Cove Markets hosts over 140 stalls along the stunning, shaded Esplanade. 8am to 2pm.

Australia’s homegrown heroes Human Nature are returning to their roots, bringing together 30 years of performances for an intimate show at CPAC. 7.30pm start.

Monday 3 May

Today’s the last day to see the 2020 Archibald Prize collection at Cairns Art Gallery. Don’t miss this incredible exhibition and display of Australian culture, society and history. 9am to 5pm.   

Paramour Cabaret Theatre is hosting Cairns’ only dedicated comedy club, Laughing Heart Comedy, this public holiday. Catch eight local comedians for just $8. 7pm start.
