Hospitality venues across the state will be required to use the Queensland Government’s own COVID check-in app from May 1.
The app stores user information so patrons don’t have to re-enter their details each time they enter a venue.
New South Wales and Victoria have recently mandated their state-based QR code apps.
Deputy Premier Steven Miles confirmed this morning that the app would be mandatory for most hospitality businesses from the beginning of May.
“The app has been incredibly successful – more than 13,500 businesses are using it now,” he said.
“The feedback from the community has been incredibly positive. Having a single app that doesn't require you to re-enter your details every time you go somewhere has been very welcomed.
“Licensed clubs that use license scanning will still have the option of using that for their recordkeeping, although we would urge them to have both systems side-by-side.
“This will allow for greater consistency, better access of data and a more convenient user experience.”
The state government is encouraging businesses to apply online now to be able to use the app by May 1. Processing can take up to three business days.
Once registered, a QR code and a business starter kit (including QR code posters) will be provided for the venue.
Each Check In Qld QR code is assigned to a physical address, so businesses with multiple locations will require a separate registration and QR code for each location.
Data collected via Check In Qld is stored securely for 56 days and is only accessed for contact tracing purposes.

Mr Miles said the government will also consider making the app mandatory for other industries.
In late December, the state government banned venues from using manual/paper COVID-19 check-in systems.
