$120 million Esplanade hotel redevelopment set to get green light

The Bellview Hotel on the Cairns Esplanade will be transformed from a 56-room low budget hotel to a 5-star 276-room development across two towers reaching 10 storeys into the sky.

Councillors are expected to approve the $120 million redevelopment of the Bellview Hotel as part of Crystalbrook Collection's $370 million suite of projects in the Cairns CBD.

The company's application for a Material Change Of Use will be voted on tomorrow following a recommendation from council officers to approve the permit.

The new Bellview will feature an "urban style bar and street eatery" on the Esplanade side and porte cochere and main hotel entry point on Abbott St, plus first floor swimming pool, yoga and meditation centre and retail offerings.

Demolition and ground works have taken place at the back of the Bellview on the Abbott St side, with construction on the towers slated to start in late 2018 following major redevelopment works at the company's other CBD sites on the Esplanade (former Tradewinds site) and Abbott St.

The project's architect Gary Hunt describes the project as a significant contributor to the notion of a green, tropical city.

"The strong integration of landscaping at all levels epitomises the overall aesthetic driver of a sculptural building form set within gardens at the lower two levels with significant tropical plantings dominating the podium level," he writes.

"In conjunction with the vertical green walls the overall impression is indelibly one of a true tropical building that will have a massive contribution to the Council’s aim of a City in a Garden."
