Police baffled by disappearance of Smithfield fisherman


FROM CAIRNS POLICE: The search for an 81-year-old man missing in the Far North continues, with police seeking public assistance.

Brian Williams, 81, was last seen at 4pm on Saturday, March 11 leaving his address on Nina Close, Smithfield after telling his family he was going fishing.

Brian did not take any fishing equipment with him.

Brian’s vehicle and boat trailer were located at the Yorkeys Knob Boating Club, but his boat was not located.

To date, police have conducted an extensive marine and aerial search, covering 19000 square Nautical Miles (NM) from Cape Flattery north of Cooktown to Dunk Island.

Despite the favourable conditions, police have not located Brian or his boat.

Police hold concerns for Brian’s welfare as he suffers from a medical condition.

Brian is described as Caucasian, approximately 185cm tall with a solid build, brown eyes and grey hair. He was last seen wearing navy shorts and an unknown coloured t-shirt.

The boat is a white half-cabin powerboat bearing a registration of JJ546Q.

Police are appealing to anyone who may be out on the water in the Far North to be on the look-out for Brian, his boat, or any debris.

Police are also appealing to anyone who may have seen Brian between 4pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, March 11 to contact them immediately.
