Calling all Cairns creatives! This is your chance to sing, strum or shimmy your way into the record books.

Local singers, dancers, street artists and musicians are invited to be part of an attempt to break the world busking record at the Busk at Dusk event on 25 August.

Hosted by CQUniversity, the event aims at smashing the current record, held by Brisbane. Organisers say a mere 388 artists are needed to claim the title for Cairns.

Open to performers of all ages, Busk at Dusk is being organised in association with local high schools to spotlight opportunities for acting, contemporary dance and popular music students to enrol in the Cairns university’s new Bachelor of Creative Arts degree.

“As this is busking, there is no requirement for everyone to learn and play the same piece together,” CQU Creative Arts lecturer Rob Woodward said.

“Everyone does their own performance. If you play anything, even as simple as a ukulele or kazoo, come on down and be part of this great community event.

“If we can get at least 15 students from each high school in Cairns, we have 300 participants already and other festival performers can be involved.

“Cairns has established traditions busking and attempting to break world records with ukulele festivals so a natural fit is to attempt to break the world busking record.”

Mr Woodward said staff from the Cairns Penny bank had offered help as stewards for the event, but noted other volunteers were welcome.

Busk at Dusk will be held on the Esplanade (from the Western Event Lawn to Fogarty Park) on August 25 between 5.30-6.30pm. Those keen to be a part of the record smashing event can register here.
