Taipans star joins the Marlins in major signing for reigning champs

He's been one of the Cairns Taipans' clutch players for a few years. Now he's set to help lead our local QBL side in their campaign for consecutive championships.

The Skytrans Cairns Marlins has just announced the signing of Stephen Weigh to its roster for the upcoming season in a major coup for the QBL side.

Weigh was on fire at the business end of the recent NBL season, bagging a new season-high record in points for three games in a row, including a 19-point haul at the Cairns Convention Centre in what has been described as his best ever performance at home.

Marlins coach Jamie Pearlman said the star signing was a priority for the side as they embark on a bid to claim back-to-back championships.

“We are always looking at potential Taipans players that can come and fill roles that we might not be able to source with local players – more often than not, it’s in the big man department,” Pearlman said.

“Stevie had a knee operation last off-season, and he expressed to me that he felt like he was finding his form again midway through the NBL season. So, it just made sense for us to try and target him.

“His talent obviously speaks for itself, he’ll be fantastic for the culture and bring a level of experience and leadership that the other players will thrive on.”

The 2017 QBL season is set to be a star-studded affair, with Weigh joining NBL alumni Torrey Craig, who has signed with the Gold Coast and Cam Tragardh who will lace up for Mackay.

Weigh said joining the Marlins was the right decision at the right time.

“Professionally, it was a smart decision for myself and my body. It was imperative that I played back-to-back seasons to maintain my strength and fitness,” he said.

“Personally, playing for the Marlins is the ideal situation. It means I can stay in Cairns and won’t have to commute during the off-season, and work hand-in-hand with our coaching staff.

“Having Jamie [Pearlman] at your disposal is a huge plus, and lays a good base for us to build on into the Taipans official pre-season.”

The final Skytrans Cairns Marlins squad will be selected after training tomorrow (March 30), with the team tipping off their QBL season on Friday 28 April at Cairns Basketball stadium, hosting Townsville from 6:30pm.
